1st Annual Grawpaws KBD Reunion

We had a wonderful weekend near Webbwood Ontario for the first annual Grawpaws Karelian Bear Dog Reunion. We had wonderful hosts at a very beautiful Bear Lodge. Niko was in doggie heaven, interacting with long lost relatives. Lots of dog talk, good food and the occasional drink. Hopefully it will become an annual event.

Back Yard Fence

We finally fenced in our back yard yesterday. Niko is very happy to run leash-free through our back yard forest! KBDs have a nice gallop when they are happy!

TTC Fetch

Niko now has his own iPhone app. TTCfetch is now available in the Apple App store. Support page is here.

Niko sniffs out all the users's closest streetcars and streetcar stops and arrival times.

Niko is quite happy with the app. There are other TTC streetcar apps available but none showing realtime data of stops and streetcars on a simple google map. They tend to be overly complicated, when really all people want to know is where are the closest streetcars and stops and how long do I have to wait. Most people know how to get from point A to B already.

Training Niko in Perl and Objective C was easy, training him to "come" is another matter!

Karelian Bear Dog walking can be tough

This is what can happen when you walk a dog at -28˚ C, -39 with the wind chill. Niko really is an Arctic dog, he just loves the cold. After he got back home, he was soon at the door scratching to get out again.

Niko and his pals

We sometimes drive to Orleans to a local baseball diamond which doubles as a dog "velodrome". Usually there are 4-12 dogs running around. Niko tends to like the Huskys or dogs who play friendly. He is easily the most sociable dog there. He has to greet every new dog first and he plays so well with everyone.

Some have said that KBDs are not good with people and other dogs. We find this hard to believe. If socialized normally, they probably are more sociable than most dogs. One dog (a badly socialized husky - not in video) in the park is obsessed with Niko and consistently tries to hurt him. Niko hasn't clued into this and still thinks the other dog is playing. This is probably because of his fearlessness. One day the husky will go too far and both the husky and Niko will learn a valuable lesson.

This video was after 80 minutes of running at -15˚. Not sure how Tuire could stand out there so long. Niko..... well he loves the cold.

  • 2 light bulbs $3
  • Laptop power plug $60
  • Freezer cord (not live) $10
  • Basement insulation $200
  • Electric razor $120

Niko had three minutes with the blackberry AND it still works! Sort-of. He managed to do more damage on the Blackberry than the iPhone. The iPhone also still works but it has some tooth marks and he chewed off the volume buttons. The iPhone is definitely more KBD-proof.
